September 9 – Trey Sweeney had the first four-hit game of his career, Parker Meadows ignited a six-run eighth inning with a two-run double and the Detroit Tigers beat the host Oakland Athletics on Sunday afternoon.

Ty Madden pitched dominantly in his first major league wins, helping the Tigers (73-71) beat the Boston Red Sox (72-71), beat the Seattle Mariners (73-71) and win a game against the Minnesota Twins (76-67) in the American League wild-card round.

After going 3-3 in California, the Tigers are now in a six-game homestand against the Colorado Rockies and Baltimore Orioles and are just 3 1/2 out of the final playoff spot currently held by Twins Field.

Sweeney, a freshman who had only nine hits overall in his first 18 major league games, hit a home run in the bottom of the third inning, his third for Detroit.

He then hit a single in the fourth inning to make the score 3–0; he scored a run with a single in the sixth inning, and hit an infield single in the eighth inning to make it a four-hit day.

The Tigers were ahead just 3-1 in the eighth inning, but singles by Spencer Torkelson and Sweeney set the stage for Meadows’ two-run double. Matt Vierling, Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter and Colt Keith delivered back-to-back hits to win the game.

Maddon (1-0), making his third major league appearance, took over after Bob Briscoe threw a scoreless first pitch in the opener. The right-hander limited the Athletics to one run and five hits over the next five innings. He walked one and struck out seven.

Meadows, Green, Carpenter and Keith all had two hits for the Tigers. Sweeney and Carpenter each drove in two runs along with Meadows, while Sweeney and Torkelson each scored two runs. The visiting team defeated Team A 16-8.

Jack Geloff’s RBI single in the sixth inning provided Oakland’s only run, and the Athletics (62–82) won 7–6 in the 13th inning and lost the series 2–1. Glover and teammate Shea Langriers had two hits each.

Oakland starter JT Ginn (0-1) allowed three runs and seven hits in the first five innings. He had one walk and five strikeouts.
