Sep 15 (Askume) – The president of the Commonwealth Games Federation has backed Australia’s multimillion-pound investment offer to support the Scottish city of Glasgow’s bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew from the bid early last year over cost concerns .

This multi-sport event, held every four years, has been struggling to find a host and MalaysiaThe Canadian province of Alberta also withdrew from plans to host the event in 2030, rejecting an offer to host the 2026 event .

Glasgow, which hosted the 2014 sporting event, stepped in as a backup venue in April, after Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) proposed cutting the sporting event budget by between £130 and £150 million (from $170 million to $196 million).

CGS said the scaled-down model would use existing sports infrastructure to deliver 10-13 sports and would not demand significant public funding.

“We are grateful to Commonwealth Games Australia (CGAUS) for their generous offer of millions of pounds,” Commonwealth Games Australia president Chris Jenkins said in a statement on Sunday. He said the Glasgow model was different but innovative.

“Glasgow 2026 will be the first step towards restoring and redefining the Commonwealth Games as a co-creative, resilient and sustainable model,” Jenkins said.
