Sept 20 (Askume) – Surrey successfully defended their county title for the third successive season after losing to Lancashire at Somerset on Friday.

After Rory Burns’ side thrashed Durham by 10 wickets on Thursday, Somerset must beat relegation-threatened Lancashire to keep the Championship race alive in the final week of the season.

However, Somerset, seeking their first county title, suffered a 168-run defeat on the final morning and Surrey were crowned champions with one round of the season remaining.

Surrey players were at attention in their dressing room at the Oval as they watched Somerset play, celebrating their title win.

Surrey won the title for the 23rd time, 10 short of York County’s record of 33 titles, and became the first team to win three championships in a row since York County 56 years earlier.
