Sept. 20—On Thursday night, Tina Charles of the Atlanta Dream became the WNBA’s all-time rebounding leader.

The 13-year WNBA veteran grabbed three rebounds in the first quarter of the regular season finale against her former team, the New York Liberty, and surpassed Sylvia Fowles with 4,007 rebounds.

The offensive rebounding record was set less than four minutes into the game. In fact, Atlanta grabbed two offensive rebounds on one possession before scoring on a driving layup by Alyssa Gray.

Charles, 35, has excelled for the Connecticut Sun (2010-13), Liberty (2014-19), Washington Mystics (2021), Phoenix Mercury (2022) and Seattle Storm (2022). Charles is an eight-time All-Star and won the 2010 Rookie of the Year Award and the 2012 WNBA Most Valuable Player Award.

She won’t play in 2020 or 2023 and signed a contract with the Dream ahead of this season.

Entering Thursday, Charles was averaging 15.0 points and 9.6 rebounds in his first 38 games (all starts) with Atlanta.

He was also inducted into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame during a pregame ceremony.
