Oct. 3—San Diego right-hander Joe Musgrove will miss the Padres’ National League wild-card series against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday because of a throwing arm injury.

ESPN reported that Musgrove left the game because of elbow discomfort.

San Diego was ahead 5-1 when Musgrove left after 3 2/3 innings. He struck out four, allowed one run on one hit and did not allow a base hit.

Musgrove threw a curveball to Atlanta’s Matt Olson for his 44th and final pitch of the night. When Musgrove prepares to throw a pitch, he extends his arm upward and then swings his right arm. As Musgrove raised his arms again, catcher Kyle Higashioka quickly ran to the mound.

Pitching coach Ruben Niebla came onto the field, followed shortly by head coach Mike Shildt and a coach. After a brief discussion, Musgrove withdrew from the contest.

Musgrove, 31, has been on the injured list twice this season because of elbow problems. The second time, he was diagnosed with a bone bruise in his elbow and missed 2 1/2 months, returning on Aug. 12.

Musgrove went 6–5 with a 3.88 ERA in 19 regular season games.
