Sept. 13—Texas Rangers star shortstop Corey Seager will have sports hernia surgery Friday and will not be able to play that day, general manager Chris Young said Thursday.

Seager had not played since September 2 and his injury was listed as a right hip strain when he was placed on the 10-day injured list two days later.

Young said proper hernia surgery now would give Seager the best chance to make a full recovery by spring training. The Rangers (70-76) fell out of the American League wild-card race.

“Obviously it’s a tough decision,” Young said Thursday before the Rangers’ road game against the Seattle Mariners. “But given the situation we’re in this season, it’s a smart decision to fully recover, have a good offseason and be ready for spring training.

“Obviously I feel bad for Corey, but he’s had a great year and he’s been a great leader for us in the clubhouse and on the field. He’s great and we’re looking forward to him getting healthy and coming back next year.” This.

Seager reportedly met with Phoenix surgeon Dr. Venkat Ivany earlier this week. Ivany performed surgery on Seager’s left hernia in January, and Seager missed most of spring training while recovering.

“He recovered well from the first surgery, and I’m sure he’ll do everything he can to recover well from the second surgery as well,” Young said.

Seager earned World Series MVP honors last season when the Rangers won their first championship.

This season, the five-time All-Star is batting .278 with 30 home runs and 74 RBIs in 123 games. He hit at least 30 home runs in three seasons with the Rangers. His last home run of the season came on Aug. 29, the 200th home run of his career.

Seager spent the first six seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was named World Series MVP in 2020 when the Dodgers won the championship.
