Sept 12 (Askume) – Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has signed a contract extension, the Premier League club said on Thursday.

The Spanish player’s current contract expires at the end of this season, and although the club have not given any details, British media said his new contract runs until 2027.

“I’m very proud, very excited and looking forward to what happens next,” Arteta said in a statement.

“I feel so inspired, I feel challenged, I feel supported, and I want to do even more than we’ve ever done together before.”

Former Arsenal midfielder Arteta took over as Guardiola’s assistant coach in December 2019 after three years at Manchester City.

The 42-year-old allows Arsenal to target a return to the Champions League in 2023 after four or five years away from the Premier League. They have finished second in the table behind Manchester City in the past two seasons.

Arteta’s side set Arsenal’s club records for the most wins and goals scored in a season during the 2023–24 season, including 28 wins after scoring 91 times.

Arsenal said they also achieved the highest winning percentage in the club’s history last season, reaching 67.3%.

Arsenal sporting director and former Brazil midfielder Edu said: “We have a strong belief in what we are doing and what we want to achieve. Mikel’s new contract gives us stability and clear direction, allowing us to reach new heights.”

Arsenal are currently fourth in the Premier League with seven points and will face local rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
