Sep 19 (Askume) – Dinamo Zagreb coach Sergei Zakirovic left the club by mutual consent on Thursday. Two days ago, his side set the record for most goals scored by a Champions League team by beating Bayern Munich 9-2.

Bayern’s Harry Kane scored four goals, becoming the most by an English player in European Championship history, while goals from Bruno Petkovic and Takuya Ogiwara fuelled a shock defeat of Croatia at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.

Bosnian Zekirovic, 47, once coached Rijeka and was appointed as Dynamo head coach in February 2023.

Last season, he led Dynamo to win their 25th league title and the Croatian Cup. Sandro Perkovic, a member of Zakirovic’s coaching staff, was appointed interim coach.

“The most important thing in this situation is to remain civil and put Dinamo’s interests first,” club president Velimir Zajc said in a statement.

“At this difficult time for Dynamo, we now need to make a high-quality decision with the new coach to get them back on the winning track.

“We had a good cooperation and Zekirovic impressed me as a great player. I wish him all the best for his future career.”

Dinamo are third in the domestic league standings with 13 points and will face Slaven Belupo on Saturday. They will take on Monaco on October 2 in their next Champions League match.
