Sept. 11 — The U.S. men’s national team felt like winners before Tuesday night’s friendly against New Zealand in Cincinnati, but they didn’t behave like one.

Rumours that had been circulating for a month were officially announced 35 minutes before the United States’ 1-1 draw with New Zealand — that Mauricio Pochettino would be replaced by Gregg Berhalter, who had been absent from the squad in July.

Christian Pulisic scored for the United States in the 69th minute, while New Zealand’s Ben Wynn spoilt the night of celebrations by scoring in the 89th minute.

With a chance to level the score, the ball fell to American defender Caleb Wiley at the top of the penalty area. His clearance beat teammates Mark McKenzie, Wayne and goalkeeper Matt Turner.

Team USA is 0-3-1 in their last four games.

Former Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino is not in Cincinnati but will be present for the match against Panama in Austin, Texas on October 12 and against Mexico in Guadalajara, Mexico three days later.

Pulisic didn’t come on until the 57th minute, replacing forward Hadji Wright under interim coach Mickey Varas. Pulisic scored his 31st goal in his 73rd cap for the national team after an impressive performance.

Marlon Forsey, who made his international debut the day after his 26th birthday, found Ricardo Pepi on the right side of the penalty area. Pepi passed the ball to Folarin Balogun, who passed it to Pulisic on the left. Pulisic moved the ball to his left with his right foot before attempting a shot.

A minute later, Balogun made a diving save from Max Crocombe. It proved to be a crucial stop.

The United States lost 2-1 to Canada on Saturday in Kansas City, Kansas, suffering its third consecutive defeat. Canada dominated the match, with the score close, thanks to five saves from goalkeeper Patrick Schultz and substitutes Luca de la Torre (who scored his first goal) and Aidan Morris (who assisted on his first Team USA goal).
