September 14 – On Friday, Colombian Camila Osorio defeated Russian player Kamila Rashmova 7-6(6), 6-2 to reach the semifinals in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Osorio, 22, is the first Colombian to reach the semifinals of a WTA 500 event. Rashimova was ahead 6-5 in the first set tiebreak, but Osorio saved a set point and then took control of the match. Osorio finished the match by saving seven of nine break points.

In the semi-finals, Osorio will face Australia’s Olivia Gadacci, who defeated Italy’s Martina Trevisan 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Gadacci, ranked 152 in the world, broke Trevisan’s serve eight times out of 10 attempts.

Fourth-seeded French player Caroline Garcia advanced with ease while her scheduled opponent, sixth-seeded Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic, withdrew due to illness. Fifth-seeded Magdalena Frietsch of Poland will face Marina Starkusik of Canada in Friday night’s final quarterfinal.

In Monastir, Tunisia, Slovakia’s Rebecca Slamkova reached the semi-finals after beating Spain’s Sala 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 in a match that lasted 3 hours and 22 minutes.

After losing a 3-0 lead in the third set, Sorribes Tomo took a 5-3 lead in the match, but Slamkova saved a match point to win the ninth game. This swung the momentum in her favour and she won three more games to outplay her opponent. Slamkova defeated Solibes Tomo eight times out of 13 opportunities.

Slamkova will face the last seed, seventh seed Lucia Bronzetti of Italy, who beat Croatia’s Antonini 6-2, 6-1 or Ruzic.

In the other semifinal, Germany’s Eva Liss will face Britain’s Sonia Cattel. Liss defeated Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez 7-5, 6-3, while Kartel beat Ukraine’s Yulia Starodubtseva 7-6(4), 6-2.
