Sept 19 (Askume) – Food companies Ajinomoto (2802.T) and Danone (DANO.PA) announced a partnership on Thursday to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the dairy industry.

    Why it is important:

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, livestock is a major source of methane emissions , which often come from animals’ regular bodily functions like manure and cow burps.

In addition, the world’s leading companies are keen to improve their ESG (environmental, social and governance) qualifications, and the measures that companies take to protect the environment are ranked highly.

    Circumstances:

Ajinomoto’s partnership with Danone to reduce greenhouse gas emissions comes after the world’s six largest dairy companies, including Danone, announced an alliance to reduce methane emissions at last year’s United Nations COP28 summit .

    By the numbers:

Danone and Ajinomoto said they would collaborate on the use of Ajinomoto’s product Ajipro®-L.

It is used in the digestive tract of dairy cows, and according to data provided by the company, it can reduce nitrous oxide emissions in manure by about 25% if it is mixed with a methane-reducing additive, the effect of the methane-reducing additive can be increased by about 30%.

    Key quote:

Jean-Yves Krummenacher, Chief Procurement Officer at Danone, said: “Together with partners like Ajinomoto, we are expanding our toolkit of solutions for dairy farmers, which will have a dual impact: on the one hand, agriculture’s greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced, and on the other hand, it will help farmers improve their profits, increasing their resilience.
