Sept 12 (Askume) – Unity Software (UN) is abandoning its “runtime fee” pricing policy, which was announced nearly a year ago to a stir in the video game developer community.

The maker of the Unity engine software said in a blog post on Thursday that it will reinstate “the existing seat-based subscription model for all gaming customers” and increase the price of Unity Pro and Unity Enterprise subscriptions.

The company’s shares were up nearly 7% in afternoon trading.

The controversial pricing structure announced last September sought to charge game developers new fees when certain revenue and install thresholds were met. The changes sparked a customer revolt that hit the company’s stock price and prompted it to roll back some aspects of the policy later that month .

“We intend to return to a more traditional cycle and only consider any potential price increases on an annual basis,” Unity CEO Matt Bromberg said in a statement.

Unity Pro subscription prices will increase by 8%, and Unity Enterprise subscription prices will increase by 25%. These changes will take effect January 1, 2025.

Following the “runtime charge” issue, Unity announced “corporate restructuring”, laying off 3.8% of its global workforce and closing offices in 14 locations across various countries.
