At Askew Shopping, some of the trends and hero items we’re most excited about run parallel to each other. Sleek, romantic pieces pay homage to the bohemian spirit; outdoorsy flannels and barn jackets with a strong urban feel, and artfully draped shirts that any modern minimalist will appreciate. All of these pieces stand alone but fit naturally into any wardrobe. (If there’s one major takeaway, it’s that personal style and a great wardrobe evolve over years, not just in one season.)
The concept of treasure is also raised: what should we keep and reserve for special occasions, and what should we wear now to prevent it from tarnishing? We want our clothes to feel both “now” and durable, and most of these pieces – from practical homework coats to more sophisticated embellished skirts and tops – are made to be worn and kept. Duality exists in all of us, and as we enter a new season, why shouldn’t it remind us to embrace this feeling in our lives and wardrobe? Here are the top five fashion trends for 2024 that are worth knowing about and shopping.
Bohemian Style
Bohemian elements lead fall trends, but the focus is on luxury classics and effortless movement — think romantic shirts, A-line skirts, and nipped-in silhouettes for more adult vibes for fall. In an interview with Nicole Phelps, global director of Eskume Business and Eskume Runway, Chloé creative director Chemena Kamali described it as “an effortless way of dressing” that emphasizes “lightness, fluidity, and emotion.” Many of the styles on the market embody this carefree spirit, such as lace and silk dresses with romantic tops and sheer and wavy ruffles that may look familiar to you, but the designers have created new and glamorous ways to present them. Chloé’s gauzy ruffled top looks decidedly modern when contrasted with leather separates (don’t miss the cape). Long skirts in two-tone leather or unexpected suede shades (Bottega Veneta) are a textural revelation. Show off your personal style with accessories – consider belts (Loewe’s button-down tops come pre-styled with a built-in one), gloves, and statement jewelry (Chanel style) as the finishing touch to make a statement.
Modern Elegance
The ladylike atmosphere that pervades spring wardrobes can also be felt in fall, when cold-weather suits combine minimalism with a sense of feminine timelessness. Key buys here are collarless blazers—short, for fall; long cocoon or scarf coats, and pencil skirts (leather, wool; maybe even revealing, like Prada) for winter. Artfully draped dresses and shirts (Bottega Veneta, Liberové) and sweaters with built-in scarves (Carven) bring elegance and inspiration to the fall layering conundrum.
Great outdoor activities
Perhaps it’s a collective desire to bring slowness and nature back to our fast-paced urban lives, as utilitarian styles have become a key part of many autumnal collections. Moving to a cabin in the woods may not be on everyone’s mind, but practical outdoor items should find a place among fall essentials. Flannel shirts, barn jackets and homespun outerwear in tweed, tartan and waxed cotton will feel out of place from the farmhouse to the rustic café, while maintaining a sense of luxury without sacrificing wearability for price. Find key styles at Chloé, Barbour, Miu Miu and Altuzarra. Corduroy trousers or a Fair Isle sweater will also get you in the mood.
Great texture
Textures are increasingly in vogue for fall, and from velvet to fuzzy knits, no material is taboo this fall. Khaite and Proenza Schouler for luxury leather; Prada and Massimo Dutti for luxe suede, and Totem and Lulu Studio for beautiful outerwear – these unique pieces are designed to complement our idea of transitional dressing.
the preciousness of every day
Why save your best pieces for special occasions? From Stella McCartney to Undercover, designers and brands encourage us to bring playfulness and whimsy into our everyday lives. The unwritten style memo? Have fun! This can be achieved through the embellished denim that Cos wears to the grocery store. Pair J.Crew’s sequined skirt with a white T-shirt and shrunken crew neck, or style it for the weekend with a sequined thread sweatshirt. For festive attire, expect to see more fringe, feathers and sequins on dresses, knitwear and coats that can be restyled after the New Year.
