Actor, writer, producer and director Rebel Wilson and fashion jewelry designer Ramona Egruma met in November 2021 through text messages from friends while they were in two different parts of the world. Rebel is filming a commercial on a remote island in Fiji while Ramona is in Los Angeles. Then, after two weeks of virtual communication, Rebel dropped everything and flew to Los Angeles to meet Ramona to see if their relationship was just as strong in real life.
“We weren’t that excited on our first date at the Bel Air Hotel,” Ramona recalls, “After two weeks of talking and feeling connected, I was nervous and I immediately noticed his warmth. He put me at ease immediately with his charming smile and I asked him to hold my hand, which he did.
Early in the couple’s relationship, their favorite first date took place at the happiest place on Earth — Disneyland — in early December 2022. “As the sun went down and the weather started to get colder, Ramona gave me her big cardigan to wear,” Rebel said. “She insisted I wear it, even though it made her feel cold. It was typical of her character. Very giving, very loving!”
After over a year of dating, the couple got engaged at a theme park in front of Cinderella Castle on Valentine’s Day 2023. “For privacy, Bob Iger arranged a special area surrounded by topiary trees,” Rebel revealed.
They were married last September at the Hotel Cala di Volpe in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, Italy, over the weekend. “At the beginning of our relationship with our friends the Ganzi family, we took a wonderful trip there,” Ramona recalls. “We had delicious food and it was the most romantic place. So we decided to have a small destination wedding there with just family and close friends.”
After the two got engaged, the entire wedding came together surprisingly quickly. “We did it in less than three months,” Rebel said. The couple split responsibilities, with Ramona working with the couple’s event planner, Sarah Carboni Events, to design elements while Rebel focused on the entertainment at the reception. To that end, the artist best known for her breakout role in the musical film “Pitch Perfect” didn’t hold back, assembling a 20-piece live band to perform three sets of music.
The couple described their wedding day attire as “couple wear,” and both women chose to wear Pronovias. “We don’t want to look alike, but we both have classic tastes,” explains Ramona. “We wanted to wear a traditional white bridal gown, and we thought the Pronovias gown was beautiful.” Rebel’s stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, played a key role in the wardrobe selection. Rebel chose Lynn: a princess-style wedding dress in Mikado fabric with a corset waist and custom removable sleeves, a strapless neckline with a royal train and a crystal beaded belt. Meanwhile, Ramona’s gown – Emerald – was an A-line wedding gown in Mikado fabric with a high waist, sweetheart neckline and cathedral-style train.
Both brides wear very little jewelry in real life, so they opted for timeless Tiffany rings. Additionally, Ramona wears a jeweled tiara and Rebel wears an embellished hairpin, both from Pronovias. Rebel’s makeup and hairstyling was done by her London-based glam team, with Mickey Kardashian on hair, J Calderbank on makeup, and Ramona hair and makeup by Lena Yasenkova.
The ceremony began at 5:30 p.m. on the beach at the Hotel Cala di Volpe. A floral arch was set up at the end of the aisle for the bride to stand under, and Rebel and Ramona’s families sat at the front on either side of the aisle. Four violinists played live for the bride as she walked down the aisle. Rebel’s best friend Nicholas served as master of ceremonies, and the couple’s 22-month-old daughter Royce and Rebel’s niece Sovereign served as flower girls. “As a London lawyer, he could always be relied upon to keep the audience entertained because he was an excellent speaker,” Rebel said.
The couple wrote their own vows, and Rebel’s niece Sovereign presented the rings to the brides so they could exchange them. “We didn’t hear each other’s vows until the end of the ceremony, so it was really exciting to hear what we had written,” Ramona said. “[After the ceremony] we were so happy and grateful that all of our family and friends could come to Sardinia to join us.” After the 30-minute ceremony, the brides kissed each other to Natalie Cole’s “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” and walked outside as guests cheered them on and threw white rose petals.
After the ceremony, guests were taken by van to the nearby Pedri Garden restaurant, where a reception was held. When they arrived, stringed instruments were playing and a space was furnished with plush couches and chairs. The restaurant’s interior is decorated with white roses and features a state-of-the-art stage for band performances, as well as a separate dessert room specially designed for events. Guests enjoyed fresh Italian cuisine: burrata, a variety of salads, homemade ravioli and risotto, which included chicken and Dover sole.
Singers performed intermittently, keeping the atmosphere full of fun and energy, and guests were dancing spontaneously throughout the evening. At around 11 p.m., the bride cut the cake in the garden and guests lit sparklers to celebrate — before the couple had their first dance to Savage Garden’s “I Knew I Loved You Before I Met You.” After the 20-member band began performing, it didn’t stop until 1 a.m.
Thinking about the wedding weekend, both Rebel and Ramona were a little tired, but in the best way. “We had a great time,” Rebel said. “It was everything we want: family, good friends, good food and wine and good entertainment.”
Ramona said: “Sardinia is a very beautiful place, but it’s not exactly the perfect place to get married, especially since we didn’t have much time with our loved ones, but it was amazing.” “Now we’re looking forward to spending time with little Royce.”
