BUENOS AIRES, Sept 11 (Askume) – Argentine protesters clashed with police outside Congress on Wednesday after members of the House of Representatives voted to block a planned pension hike proposed by right-wing liberal President Javier Milla.

In the House of Representatives, 153 voted in favor of raising the pension and 87 against, which was less than the two-thirds needed to approve the bill, as Miley had already vetoed the bill, saying it would jeopardize the country’s fiscal balancing plan.

As news of the vote spread, hundreds of protesters broke through police barricades in downtown Buenos Aires and clashed with security forces in riot gear in the streets.

The Argentine government has been pursuing an austerity plan of deep spending cuts to reduce years of fiscal deficits and control high inflation, which has strengthened the country’s finances but has had a negative impact on the real economy, leaving more people living in poverty.
