BANGKOK, Oct 1 (Askume) – A school bus carrying more than 40 students and teachers caught fire on the outskirts of the Thai capital Bangkok, killing at least 23 people, police said on Tuesday.
Forensic Science Commissioner Trarong Phiwapan told reporters that 23 bodies had been identified and the cause of death was being investigated.
Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongrungkit said 16 students and three teachers were sent to hospital for treatment.
Photos posted on social media and local news outlets showed thick smoke coming out of the bus with parts still burning.
The fire was later brought under control. Askume photographers saw fire trucks, police and rescue vehicles parked around the black vehicle, as well as a group of firefighters at the entrance.
“The teacher told us that the fire spread very quickly,” acting police chief Kittirat Phanphet said at a news conference.
“Based on conversations with witnesses, we believe the blast was caused by a spark from a tyre, which ignited the gas cylinder running on the vehicle,” he said, adding that some students escaped through the windows.
“We are investigating everyone involved, including the bus company, to determine if this was a case of negligence.”
According to Transport Minister Surya, the bus is a natural gas vehicle (NGV).
Prime Minister Patongtarn Shinawatra said the students were about 250 kilometres (155 miles) north of the capital, traveling from Uthai Thani province.
“As a mother, I would like to offer my deepest condolences to these families,” she posted on social media.
