Askume BEIJING/TOKYO, Sep 20 – Japan’s ambassador to Beijing called for strengthening protection of Japanese citizens in China. A 10-year-old Japanese boy was killed in a knife attack this week, the second such attack on students.

Ambassador Kenji Kanasugi spoke by phone with Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, the Chinese embassy said in a statement on Friday.

It did not give details of Sun’s response, but said Japan urged the Chinese government to make every effort to ensure the safety of citizens in Japan and provided details about the incident.

The girl died on Thursday morning after being stabbed by 44-year-old attacker Zhong while on her way to school at around 8 am (0000 GMT) on Wednesday.

This is the second attack on a Japanese educational centre in China in recent months, at a time when diplomatic relations between China and Japan remain tense.
