JAKARTA, Sept 21 (Askume) – New Zealand pilot Philip Mehrtens has been released from more than 18 months of captivity in Papua, Indonesia, Indonesian police said in a statement on Saturday.

On February 7, 2023, Mertens, an armed faction of the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) led by Agianus Kogoya, landed a small commercial plane in the remote mountainous area of ​​Nduga.

“We are prioritising action through religious leaders, church leaders, traditional leaders and relatives of Agianus Kogoya to minimise casualties and maintain the safety of the pilot,” Brigadier General Ramadani said.

Police said Mertens was released by the joint team in Nduga County and is currently undergoing health and physical examination in Timika County.

Police will hold a press conference later.
