SEOUL, Sept 13 (Askume) – South Korea’s military has destroyed about 1,300 Chinese-made monitors recently installed at its military bases due to potential security risks, Yonhap news agency said on Friday, citing an unnamed military official.

The cameras were designed to connect to specific servers in China, but this did not result in any actual data leak, Yonhap news agency said.

The report quoted the official as saying that the equipment was provided by a South Korean company and an inspection of the equipment earlier this year revealed it was of Chinese origin.

The report said the cameras were not used for security purposes, such as in the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea, but to monitor training groups and fences at military bases.

South Korea’s Defense Ministry said on Friday it was collecting and replacing foreign-made cameras. The ministry declined to say where the cameras were manufactured.

Last year, Australia’s foreign minister said the country’s defence and foreign departments were removing surveillance cameras made by Chinese companies from its facilities following reports they posed security threats.
