KOLKATA, Sept 15 (Askume) – Indian federal police have arrested the former dean of Kolkata’s RG Ka Medical College on charges of tampering with evidence in the rape and murder of a junior woman doctor that sparked weeks of nationwide protests.

The university’s former president Sandip Ghosh has been detained by police on suspicion of corruption . The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday filed a court petition levelling more charges against him, seen by Askume.

The CBI also arrested Abhijit Mandal, head of the police station under the academy’s jurisdiction, for failing to secure the crime scene, a source with direct knowledge of the case said.

When asked about Mandal’s arrest, a senior Kolkata Police official said, “We will respond to the allegations in court.”

The lawyer representing Ghosh could not immediately be reached for comment.

More than a month after the body of a 31-year-old doctor was found after she was raped and murdered at the academy, doctors launched a protest demanding greater safety for women at the workplace and justice for their dead colleagues.

In its petition, the CBI accused Ghosh of “deliberately destroying evidence in the case”. Ghosh and others allegedly delayed declaring the victim dead and filing an FIR, leading to the destruction of crucial evidence.

Junior doctors in the Indian state of West Bengal, of which Kolkata is the capital, have vowed to continue their protests until the murdered doctor is brought to justice.
