JERUSALEM, Sept 17 (Askume) – Israel’s internal security agency said on Tuesday it had foiled a plot by Lebanese militant group Hezbollah to assassinate a former senior defense official in the coming days.

The officer was not named by the Shin Bet agency. It said in a statement that he used mobile phones and cameras to seize an explosive device connected to a remote detonation system that Hezbollah planned to operate from Lebanon.

Shin Bet said the attempted attack was similar to a Hezbollah plot foiled in Tel Aviv a year ago but did not provide further details.

Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah have been fighting on the Lebanese border since October, the worst violence in two decades.
