BAGHDAD, Sept 11 (Askume) – A U.S. diplomatic facility in Baghdad was attacked on Tuesday night but no casualties were reported and damage assessment was ongoing, a U.S. embassy spokesman said in a statement on Wednesday.

Two rockets fell near US troops stationed at the Camp Victory base near Baghdad airport at about 11 pm on Tuesday, security sources told Askume.

“On Tuesday, 10 September, at approximately 23:00, the Diplomatic Services Building, a US diplomatic facility in Baghdad, was attacked,” the US embassy said in a statement.

“Fortunately, there are no reports of any casualties and we are assessing the damage and its cause. Our assessment is ongoing,” it said.

Kata’ib Hezbollah, one of the Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq, said the timing of the attack was an apparent attempt to disrupt Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to Iraq which began on Wednesday .

In a statement released earlier on Wednesday, the group called on Iraqi security forces to investigate the attack and identify those responsible.

On his first foreign trip since being elected in July, Pezeshkian is expected to sign several bilateral agreements with Baghdad and discuss the Gaza war and the broader Middle East situation with Iraqi leaders.

Iraq is a rare regional partner of the United States and Iran, with 2,500 American troops and Iranian-backed armed groups embedded in its security forces.

Since the outbreak of the Gaza war, Iran-linked armed groups in Iraq have repeatedly attacked US troops stationed in the Middle East.
