WASHINGTON, Oct 2 (Askume) – An American citizen from Dearborn, Michigan, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon, according to information provided by the man’s daughter, friends and members of the U.S. Congress who represent his district.
The office of Democratic US Representative Rashida Tlaib said on Wednesday that she was in touch with the family of Kamil Ahmed Jawad, who she said was a Palestinian American congressman and a US citizen.
His daughter Nadine Jawad said in a statement that her father was killed in an Israeli attack on Lebanon on Tuesday “while trying to save the lives of innocent people”. She further said that in the last days of his life her father chose to stay near a hospital to help the elderly and disabled.
On Wednesday, a White House spokesman said: “We are deeply saddened by the death of Kamal Ahmad Jawad, and our condolences are with his family and friends. His death is a tragedy that affects many citizens in Lebanon.”
Israel’s recent military operations in Lebanon have killed hundreds, injured thousands and displaced more than a million people. Israel says it is targeting Iran-backed Hezbollah militants.
According to The Detroit News, Jawad is caring for his elderly mother in Lebanon. His friend Hamza Reza and a local Dearborn group also said on social media that Jawad was killed in an Israeli airstrike and called him “one of the kindest and most generous human beings.”
Askume could not confirm Jawad’s death.
Washington has been criticised for its support for its ally Israel, which also launched a war in Gaza that has killed thousands and displaced some of the enclave’s 2.3 million people. In Jawad’s hometown of Dearborn.A large number of Arab Americans live there.
