KIEV, Sept 12 (Askume) – President Zelenskyy has rejected a China-Pakistan peace initiative over the war in Ukraine, calling it “destructive” and complaining that Kiev was not involved in the process.

China and Brazil called for an international peace conference in May recognised by Russia and Ukraine with equal participation of all parties and for all peace plans to be discussed impartially.

“The proposal from China and Brazil … is destructive, it’s just a political statement,” Zelenskyy said in an interview with Brazilian media outlet Metropolis on Wednesday.

“How can you say ‘this is our initiative’ without asking us anything?”

According to film footage released by the Met, Zelensky said the initiative lacked respect for Ukraine and its territorial integrity and that Russian President Vladimir Putin needed to take steps to show he wanted to end the war.

The Ukrainian leader said he had offered to discuss the proposal with China and Brazil.

Askume reported in June that China was trying to include developing countries in a six-point initiative floated ahead of a Ukraine-led summit in Switzerland.

Putin said in May that he supports China’s peace proposals, and this month he suggested India join China and Brazil in playing a mediator role in potential peace talks on Ukraine

Beijing’s 12-point plan at the start of the war has been met with a cold response in Ukraine, with the United States saying China portrayed itself as a peacemaker but reflected Russia’s “false narrative” and failed to condemn its attacks.

Zelensky’s own proposals include withdrawing troops from Ukraine, restoring Ukraine’s post-1991 Soviet borders and holding Russia accountable for its actions.

He said he believed the Brazilian government was “more pro-Russia.” He added, “It’s important to remember that Russia’s love is temporary and Russia’s disrespect for the rule of law is permanent.”
